About Frauenkirche
Munich's twin-towered symbol, capped with two rounded green domes when the money for Gothic spires ran out in 1525, and so beloved that the city voted to keep its whole skyline below them.
The Frauenkirche, formally the Cathedral of Our Lady (Dom zu Unserer Lieben Frau), is Munich's defining landmark and, since 1821, the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. Designed by Jörg von Halsbach and built of red brick between 1468 and 1488, it was consecrated in 1494. Its twin towers, about 98.5 metres tall and differing by only some twelve centimetres, were not finished as planned: the intended Gothic spires were abandoned for lack of funds, and around 1525 the towers were capped instead with the rounded Renaissance-style domes that became the symbol of Munich. Since a 2004 referendum, the city has broadly kept new buildings in the centre below the height of these towers. Just inside the entrance, a footprint-shaped mark in the floor is known as the Teufelstritt, or Devil's Footstep, the subject of a well-known Munich legend.
Did you know? For most of its life the Frauenkirche was simply a parish church. It became a cathedral only in 1821, when Munich and Freising were combined into a new archbishopric.
