About Milan Central Station

Italy's largest and most spectacular railway station (1931), an extraordinary fusion of Art Nouveau fantasy and Fascist monumentalism that has been called "one of the great theatrical spaces of the 20th century."

Milan Central Station (Stazione Centrale di Milano) is the largest railway station in Italy and one of the most architecturally spectacular in the world, a building of such theatrical excess that it operates simultaneously as transport hub, monument, and stage set. Designed by Ulisse Stacchini, it was begun in the Art Nouveau style in 1906 but not completed until 1931, by which time the stylistic vocabulary had shifted dramatically toward the Fascist monumentalism of Mussolini's Italy. The result is a unique fusion: the sinuous organic decoration of Art Nouveau overlaid with the massive scale, the imperious axis, and the triumphal arches of totalitarian architecture. The main hall, with its enormous vaulted iron-and-glass roof, is among the most dramatic interior spaces in any Italian city. The station serves about 320,000 passengers a day and is the hub of Italy's high-speed rail network.

Did you know? Milan Central Station took 19 years to build (1912–1931), during which time it evolved from an Art Nouveau design into a Fascist monument, one of the most extreme examples of architectural schizophrenia in history. The original budget was 17 million lire; by the time it was completed, the cost had risen to over 200 million lire.
