About Abbazia di Chiaravalle
A magnificent 12th-century Cistercian abbey hidden in the farmland south of Milan, founded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux himself in 1135, with a soaring Gothic campanile and a cloister of extraordinary serenity.
The Abbazia di Chiaravalle is Milan's greatest hidden treasure, a complete, intact 12th-century Cistercian monastery hidden in the farmland south of the city, completely surrounded by the working fields and irrigation canals of the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. Founded in 1135 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the greatest religious reformer of the 12th century and the man who created the Cistercian tradition of austere, simple, architecturally magnificent monasteries, Chiaravalle is one of the oldest Cistercian foundations in Italy. The complex comprises the great church with its soaring 14th-century Gothic campanile (one of the finest in Lombardy), the cloister with its beautiful twin-arched colonnades, the chapter house, refectory, and monastic buildings. Cistercian monks still live at Chiaravalle and maintain the tradition of Gregorian chant; visitors are welcome at daily Mass.
Did you know? Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153), who founded Chiaravalle in 1135, was arguably the most influential individual in 12th-century Europe, a theologian, preacher, monastic reformer, and political operator who launched the Second Crusade (1147) with a sermon that reportedly moved crowds to tears and immediate enlistment. He also personally chose the Pope (Innocent II) in the disputed papal election of 1130, helping to end a schism. He was canonised in 1174 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1830.
