MUSMA (Museo della Scultura Contemporanea Matera) is one of Italy's most unusual museums: a collection of modern and contemporary sculpture housed within the historic Palazzo Pomarici, a substantial cave dwelling complex in the Sasso Caveoso that was carved from the tufa limestone over several centuries and includes cave rooms, underground cisterns, and open terraces. The collection of over 300 sculptures by Italian and international artists, ranging from early 20th-century modern masters to contemporary work, is displayed throughout the palazzo's varied spaces, some in bright, naturally lit cave rooms, some in the dim interior of ancient cisterns, some on the outdoor terraces with views over the Caveoso. The combination of ancient space and contemporary art creates an extraordinary dialogue.
