About Casa Noha
A restored cave house managed by FAI (the Italian National Trust) that houses an immersive multimedia introduction to the history of Matera, the essential first stop for understanding the Sassi before exploring them.
Casa Noha is a restored cave house in the Sasso Barisano managed by FAI (Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, the Italian equivalent of the National Trust) as an introduction centre for the history and culture of Matera. The house was occupied by the Noha family until the forced evacuation of the Sassi in the 1950s and has been carefully restored to show what the cave life of Matera looked like. More importantly, it contains a sophisticated multimedia installation, a 22-minute film, that tells the story of the Sassi from prehistoric times to the present day, including the forced evacuation and the subsequent transformation into heritage. It is the recommended starting point for any visit to Matera.
Did you know? FAI (Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano) is Italy's equivalent of Britain's National Trust, a private conservation charity that manages important historic properties and landscapes across Italy. Casa Noha was among the first southern Italian properties in the FAI portfolio and helped establish Matera as a heritage destination in the 1990s.
