About Rock Churches of Matera

Over 150 rock-cut Byzantine churches scattered through the Sassi and surrounding countryside, many still containing medieval frescoes, among the finest examples of Byzantine religious art in southern Italy.

The rupestrian (rock-cut) churches of Matera are among the most remarkable concentrations of Byzantine sacred art in the western Mediterranean. Over 150 churches and chapels were carved from the tufa limestone of the Matera plateau and its surrounding ravines between approximately the 8th and 13th centuries, primarily by Byzantine monks and hermits seeking isolation in this remote landscape. Many of these churches contain the remains of Byzantine-style frescoes, images of Christ, the Virgin, saints, and the angelic hierarchy painted in the intense, gold-and-blue palette characteristic of the Byzantine tradition. The churches vary enormously in size and sophistication, from simple single-room oratories to multi-nave basilicas with elaborate decorative programmes. The most accessible are Santa Maria de Idris and Santa Lucia alle Malve in the Sasso Caveoso.

Did you know? The Byzantine-style frescoes in Matera's rock churches are painted using a technique called 'secco' rather than the 'buon fresco' method used in most Italian church painting. In secco fresco, pigments are applied to dry plaster rather than wet, which is less durable but easier to execute in the cave environment. This is why many of the frescoes are now partially lost.
