The Museo Lázaro Galdiano is one of Madrid's most rewarding and least crowded museums, an extraordinary private collection assembled by the Spanish publisher and collector José Lázaro Galdiano (1862-1947) and housed in his elegant Italianate palace in the Salamanca neighbourhood, the Parque Florido. The collection encompasses over 13,000 objects of exceptional quality spanning five centuries: paintings by Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo, Bosch, Rembrandt, and Gainsborough; medieval ivories, enamels, and armour; Renaissance bronze statuettes; a magnificent collection of decorative arts including furniture, textiles, ceramics, and silverwork; and important English paintings including works by Constable, Reynolds, and Romney. Galdiano donated the entire collection and his palace to the Spanish state upon his death. The building itself, a four-storey Italianate villa with painted ceilings, ornate woodwork, and a beautiful garden, is as much a reason to visit as the collection.
