About Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales

A hidden 16th-century royal convent in the heart of Madrid, still inhabited by Franciscan nuns, containing one of the richest collections of religious art in Spain.

The Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales, the Monastery of the Royal Barefoot Nuns, is one of Madrid's best-kept secrets and most extraordinary hidden treasures. Founded in 1559 by Juana of Austria, daughter of Emperor Charles V and sister of Philip II, on the site of a former royal palace where she herself had been born, it became the most fashionable and prestigious convent in Spain, attracting daughters of the aristocracy and even of European royal houses as its nuns. These illustrious women brought extraordinary dowries in the form of artworks, tapestries, relics, and devotional objects, accumulating over five centuries into one of the finest collections of religious art in Spain. The convent is still inhabited by a community of Franciscan Clarisse nuns and can only be visited on guided tours of restricted duration. Highlights include a magnificent staircase with trompe-l'œil frescoes, twelve chapels filled with artistic treasures including works by Rubens, Titian, and Brueghel the Elder, and an extraordinary tapestry collection.

Did you know? The monastery still houses a living community of Franciscan Clarisse nuns, visits are only permitted on guided tours at specific times, and the nuns' private quarters are entirely off-limits.
