About Sorolla Museum

The former home and studio of the great Valencian Impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla, now a charming museum showcasing his luminous Mediterranean beach scenes and stunning private garden.

The Museo Sorolla is one of Madrid's most intimate and charming museums, the former house, studio, and garden of the great Spanish Impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923), preserved almost exactly as it was when the artist lived and worked there. Sorolla is perhaps the most celebrated Spanish painter of the late 19th and early 20th century after Goya, renowned above all for his extraordinarily luminous depictions of the Mediterranean coast, sun-drenched beaches, sparkling water, children playing at the sea's edge, painted with a loose, vibrant brushwork that captures light and movement with extraordinary virtuosity. He built his Madrid house and studio in 1911, working here until his death in 1923, and his wife Carmen donated the property to the Spanish state in 1925, stipulating that it be preserved as a museum exactly as Sorolla had left it. The garden, divided into three Andalusian-style patios with fountains, ceramic tile benches, and lush vegetation, is one of the most beautiful private gardens in Madrid.

Did you know? Sorolla was so successful in his lifetime that the American art collector Archer Milton Huntington commissioned him to paint a 14-panel mural cycle depicting the regions of Spain, it now hangs in the Hispanic Society of America in New York.
