About St. Paul's Cathedral

Sir Christopher Wren's baroque masterpiece, crowned by one of the largest cathedral domes in the world.

St. Paul's Cathedral is the masterwork of Sir Christopher Wren, built between 1675 and 1710 to replace the medieval cathedral destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Its enormous dome, rising 111 metres to the tip of its golden cross, dominated the London skyline for nearly 300 years.

The dome is actually three domes in one: an outer lead-covered timber dome, an inner painted dome, and a hidden brick cone that supports the massive stone lantern on top. Inside, the Whispering Gallery at 30 metres above the floor allows a whisper to travel 34 metres across the curved wall.

St. Paul's has hosted the funerals of Nelson, Wellington, and Churchill, and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. During the Blitz, the iconic photograph of the dome rising above clouds of smoke became a symbol of London's defiance.

Did you know? The Whispering Gallery allows a whisper against the wall to be heard clearly 34 metres away on the opposite side.
