About Trafalgar Square
London's grand central square, dominated by Nelson's Column and flanked by the National Gallery.
Trafalgar Square is the beating heart of London. Named to commemorate Admiral Nelson's victory at Trafalgar in 1805, it was laid out in the 1830s and '40s by Sir Charles Barry. Nelson's Column, a 52-metre Corinthian column, is guarded by four bronze lions sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer.
The square's north side is graced by the National Gallery with over 2,300 paintings spanning seven centuries, all free to enter. The Fourth Plinth has hosted contemporary artworks since 1999.
Trafalgar Square hosts New Year's Eve celebrations, political rallies, and the annual Norwegian Christmas tree, a gift from Norway every year since 1947 in gratitude for Britain's wartime support.
Did you know? The bronze reliefs at the base of Nelson's Column were cast from captured French guns, and the four Landseer lions are traditionally said to have been cast from French cannon too.
