About Hyde Park

One of London's eight Royal Parks, spanning 142 hectares of green space with the Serpentine lake and Speakers' Corner.

Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in central London, covering 142 hectares. Originally a hunting ground seized by Henry VIII from the monks of Westminster Abbey in 1536, it was opened to the public in the early 17th century.

The park's centrepiece is the Serpentine, a 16-hectare recreational lake created in 1730. Speakers' Corner, near Marble Arch, has been a bastion of free speech since the 1870s, Karl Marx, Lenin, and George Orwell have all spoken here.

The park has hosted the Great Exhibition of 1851, massive concerts, and the 2012 Olympic triathlon. Whether jogging, picnicking, or horse riding along Rotten Row, Hyde Park offers nature in the heart of one of the world's busiest cities.

Did you know? Henry VIII seized Hyde Park from Westminster Abbey in 1536 to use as a private hunting ground.
