About Jerónimos Monastery
A UNESCO World Heritage Manueline masterpiece begun in 1502, where Vasco da Gama is buried amid some of the finest limestone carvings in the world.
The Jerónimos Monastery stands as Portugal's greatest architectural achievement, a breathtaking expression of the Manueline style that fuses late Gothic structure with maritime decorative imagery. Construction began in 1502 under King Manuel I, financed by the profits of the lucrative spice trade with India, and took almost a century to complete. The astonishing south portal, carved by João de Castilho, is covered in armillary spheres, twisted ropes, coral, and exotic creatures, a stone encyclopedia of the Age of Discovery. Inside, slender pillars rise like palm trees to support a magnificent vaulted ceiling. Vasco da Gama, whose voyage to India in 1498 changed the world, is buried in the church, as is the great poet Luís de Camões. The two-story cloister is regarded as one of the finest Gothic cloisters in existence, its arches intricately carved with maritime motifs. UNESCO granted the monastery World Heritage status in 1983.
Did you know? The monastery was financed by a 5% tax on all spice revenues from the India trade, literally built with pepper money.
