About Alfama District
Lisbon's oldest and most atmospheric neighbourhood, with Moorish roots, steep winding alleys, fado music, and sweeping views over the Tagus.
Alfama is the soul of Lisbon, a labyrinthine tangle of narrow alleys, whitewashed houses hung with laundry, old women in black sitting on doorsteps, and cats sleeping in patches of afternoon sunshine. This is the oldest surviving neighbourhood in the city, its irregular organic street pattern the legacy of the Moorish occupation that lasted from 714 to 1147. The name Alfama derives from the Arabic Al-hama, meaning hot springs, a reference to the thermal springs that once flowed here. When Afonso Henriques reconquered Lisbon in 1147, the Moorish inhabitants retreated to this hillside, and their street plan survived virtually intact. Most remarkable of all, Alfama survived the catastrophic 1755 earthquake that destroyed most of Lisbon, because its rocky hillside was solid enough to withstand the tremors. Today, Alfama remains a living neighbourhood where families have lived for generations, where fado music drifts from restaurant windows on summer evenings, and where the viewpoints, miradouros, offer the most romantic views of Lisbon and the Tagus.
