About Lisbon Cathedral (Sé)
The oldest church in Lisbon, founded in 1147 by the city's first bishop, built on the site of a former mosque in severe Romanesque style.
The Sé de Lisboa, Lisbon's cathedral, is the oldest surviving church in the city, its twin crenellated towers and fortress-like façade rising powerfully over the narrow streets of Alfama. Founded in 1147 in the same year that Afonso Henriques reconquered Lisbon from the Moors, the cathedral was deliberately built over the site of the city's main mosque as a statement of Christian conquest. The original church was Romanesque, and despite centuries of additions, earthquakes, and restorations, that austere Romanesque spirit survives in the heavy rose window, the thick walls, and the solemn nave. The cloister, begun in the 13th century, contains fascinating archaeological excavations revealing Roman, Moorish, and medieval layers. The cathedral treasury holds remarkable pieces of sacred art including the reliquary of Saint Vincent, Lisbon's patron, and a 13th-century Gothic triptych. The church is also associated with Saint Anthony of Padua, who was baptised here in 1195, making it a major pilgrimage destination every June during the Festas de Lisboa.
Did you know? Saint Anthony of Padua, patron saint of lost things, was baptised in this cathedral in 1195; his birthplace is just steps away up the hill.
