About Chiado District
Lisbon's literary and artistic quarter, home to Café A Brasileira, elegant bookshops, the Fernando Pessoa statue, and the most refined shopping in the city.
Chiado is the intellectual and cultural heart of Lisbon, a hillside neighbourhood of elegant 18th and 19th-century buildings, bookshops, art galleries, theatres, and the cafés where generations of writers, artists, and thinkers have gathered to debate the nature of the world. The district takes its name from the 16th-century poet António Ribeiro, nicknamed "O Chiado." Today, Chiado is associated above all with Fernando Pessoa, Portugal's greatest modern poet, who spent much of his working life in the neighbourhood's cafés, particularly the famous Café A Brasileira on Rua Garrett. A bronze statue of Pessoa sitting at a café table outside A Brasileira is one of the most photographed things in Lisbon. The Livraria Bertrand on Rua Garrett, founded in 1732, is the oldest operating bookshop in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. Chiado was partially devastated by a fire in 1988 that destroyed much of Rua do Carmo, but was masterfully reconstructed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, who preserved the historic character while rebuilding with contemporary sensitivity.
Did you know? Livraria Bertrand on Rua Garrett, founded in 1732, holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest operating bookshop in the world.
