About National Coach Museum
The world's finest collection of royal coaches, with over 70 ornate 17th–19th century carriages used by Portuguese and European royalty, housed in a spectacular new building in Belém.
The National Coach Museum houses what is universally acknowledged as the world's greatest collection of royal carriages, a staggering assembly of over 70 vehicles spanning three centuries of royal grandeur from the late 17th to the early 20th century. The collection, originally assembled in the Royal Riding Hall of the Palace of Belém, moved in 2015 to a spectacular new building designed by the Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, a vast, concrete and glass structure that provides the space and light these extraordinary objects deserve. The carriages range from the functional to the fantastical: some are relatively simple diplomatic vehicles, others are rococo confections of gilded wood, polychrome painted panels, velvet interiors, and carved allegorical figures that took teams of craftsmen years to create. The most spectacular are three carriages made for the Portuguese ambassador to Pope Clement XI in 1716, among the most elaborate wheeled vehicles ever constructed. Also displayed are the coronation coach of King João V, royal litters, and a series of vehicles illustrating the evolution of carriage design from the 16th century onward.
Did you know? Three coaches made for the 1716 Portuguese ambassador to Rome are considered among the most elaborate wheeled vehicles ever constructed.
