The spectacular coastline of the Salento peninsula, two Adriatic and Ionian Sea coasts with some of the most beautiful beaches and clearest water in the entire Mediterranean.
The Salento peninsula, the heel of the Italian boot, has two distinct coastlines: the Adriatic coast to the east, with rocky limestone shores, sea caves, and dramatic cliffs; and the Ionian coast to the west, with long stretches of fine white sand and shallow turquoise water. Between them they offer some of the most beautiful sea swimming in the entire Mediterranean. The Adriatic side is wilder and more dramatic, with famous spots including Grotta della Poesia (the Cave of Poetry, whose walls are covered with prehistoric inscriptions), the sea caves of Porto Badisco, and the Torre dell'Orso. The Ionian side has the famous beaches of Punta Prosciutto, Baia Verde, and the long sandy stretches south of Gallipoli. The water temperature is warm from June through October, and the clarity is extraordinary, visibility underwater often exceeds fifteen metres.
