About Otranto (Day Trip)

The most easterly city in Italy, with Europe's most spectacular Romanesque mosaic floor, a hilltop castle, and a coastline of the most brilliant turquoise water in the Mediterranean.

Otranto is the most easterly city in Italy, the point of the peninsula closest to Greece and Albania, and one of the most historically charged locations on the Adriatic. The city's great Cathedral of the Annunciation contains one of the most extraordinary artistic achievements of medieval Europe: a complete Romanesque mosaic floor created in 1163-1165 by the monk Pantaleone, covering the entire nave and aisles with a Tree of Life design populated by knights, monsters, biblical figures, historical scenes, and scenes from daily medieval life. Otranto also endured one of the most terrible massacres of the Italian Renaissance: in 1480, the Ottoman admiral Gedik Ahmed Pasha besieged and captured the city, killing almost the entire population. The 800 survivors who refused to convert to Islam were executed, they are now known as the Martyrs of Otranto and were canonised as saints by Pope Francis in 2013.

Did you know? The mosaic floor of Otranto Cathedral (1163-1165) covers the entire floor of the cathedral and is the largest and most complete Romanesque mosaic floor in Europe, its 800 square metres of narrative imagery constitute a complete medieval encyclopaedia in stone.
