About Gallipoli (Day Trip)

An ancient Greek-founded port city on an islet connected to the mainland by a bridge, with baroque churches, a great Aragonese castle, and the most celebrated summer beach scene in Puglia.

Gallipoli, from the Greek 'Kallipolis', meaning beautiful city, is one of the most unusual and charming settlements in all of Puglia. The historic centre occupies an almost entirely natural island connected to the mainland by a 17th-century stone bridge, and the setting is immediately striking: the white baroque buildings of the old town rise from the sea on all sides, surrounded by the brilliant blue-green water of the Ionian. The city's great Aragonese castle guards the bridge entrance, and within the old town a magnificent baroque cathedral and dozens of churches crowd the narrow streets. In summer, Gallipoli becomes one of the most intensely visited resort towns in southern Italy, with its excellent sandy beaches to the south of the town attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. The historic centre retains much of its original character despite the seasonal pressure.

Did you know? Gallipoli's old town is built on a natural island, until a bridge was completed in the 17th century, the only way to enter the city was by boat, giving it a natural defence that helped it survive numerous sieges throughout the medieval period.
