About Vrijdagmarkt
Ghent's largest and most historically charged square, site of medieval guild assemblies, public executions, and home to the statue of Jacob van Artevelde.
The Vrijdagmarkt, 'Friday Market' in Dutch, is the largest square in Ghent and one of the most historically significant public spaces in all of Belgium. For centuries it served as the principal gathering place for the city's powerful guilds: their assemblies, their celebrations, their political confrontations, and their executions all took place on these cobblestones.
Dominating the square is a large bronze statue of Jacob van Artevelde, the fourteenth-century merchant and political leader who allied Ghent with England during the Hundred Years' War and ruled the city with near-monarchical power. Van Artevelde was eventually murdered in 1345 in an uprising, and the square itself witnessed many subsequent political crises.
Today the Vrijdagmarkt is bordered by guild house facades and the remarkable Ons Huis ('Our House'), the grand 1899 building that served as headquarters for Ghent's socialist workers' movement. The square is also home to the Dulle Griet, the enormous 'Mad Meg' cannon, and hosts regular antique markets.
Did you know? In 1540, after crushing a revolt, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V forced Ghent's leaders to parade barefoot with hangman's nooses around their necks, Ghent locals proudly call themselves 'stroppendragers' (noose-bearers) to this day.
