About Prinsenhof: Birthplace of Charles V

The former palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, birthplace of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1500, now a hotel complex with the surviving gateway marking its imperial origins.

The Prinsenhof, 'Prince's Court' in Dutch, was one of the great palaces of the medieval Low Countries, the principal residence of the Dukes of Burgundy and, later, the Habsburg governors of Flanders. Its most momentous association is with the birth here, on 24 February 1500, of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Spain, lord of the Americas, ruler of the largest empire the world had ever seen.

The original palace was an enormous complex stretching across a large part of the Prinsenhof neighbourhood, with grand halls, chapels, gardens, and apartments for the ducal court. Charles V's baptism was celebrated here with extraordinary festivities. After the decline of Habsburg power in the Low Countries, the palace was gradually demolished over the following centuries and its materials sold or repurposed. Today the principal survival is the impressive late-Gothic gateway, which gives a sense of the scale and ambition of the original structure. The site is now largely occupied by the Marriott Hotel, though the gateway and a small garden mark its imperial origins.

Did you know? Charles V, born here on 24 February 1500, went on to rule an empire spanning Europe, the Americas, and parts of Asia, the largest in history to that point.
