About Patershol

Ghent's oldest surviving neighbourhood, a labyrinth of 17th-century cobbled lanes, timber-framed houses, and some of Belgium's finest restaurants.

Patershol, named after the Carmelite friars ('paters') who had a monastery here in the seventeenth century, is the oldest surviving residential neighbourhood in Ghent, a remarkably intact labyrinth of medieval and seventeenth-century streets tucked behind Gravensteen Castle. The narrow cobbled lanes, low-beamed houses, and intimate courtyards give Patershol a character quite different from the grand civic architecture of Ghent's centre.

For much of the twentieth century Patershol was a neglected, impoverished neighbourhood. Its revival began in the 1980s when its low rents attracted artists, followed by restaurateurs who recognised the atmospheric setting as perfect for intimate dining. Today Patershol is considered one of the best dining destinations in Belgium, with dozens of excellent restaurants serving Flemish cuisine, French cooking, and international food in restored medieval buildings. It remains a living neighbourhood, with residents alongside the restaurants and shops.

Did you know? Patershol was nearly demolished in the 1970s, Ghent's decision to preserve it is now considered one of Belgium's finest urban conservation victories.
