About Gravensteen Castle

The imposing 12th-century moated castle of the Counts of Flanders, rising dramatically from the city's medieval canals.

Gravensteen, 'Castle of the Counts' in Dutch, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Western Europe and a defining landmark of Ghent's skyline. Built in 1180 by Philip of Alsace, Count of Flanders, on the site of an older wooden fortress, it was designed to intimidate the powerful and rebellious guilds of Ghent. The castle features a massive circular keep, towers, battlements, and a complete moat still filled with water from the River Lieve.

Over the centuries Gravensteen has served many purposes: it was the seat of the Count's power, a court of justice, a prison featuring an extensive collection of medieval torture instruments, a cotton mill in the industrial era, and even a mint. Its torture chamber and armoury remain accessible to visitors today. The castle houses an impressive collection of medieval armour, weapons, and instruments of justice. Climbing to the battlements rewards visitors with sweeping panoramic views over Ghent's historic rooftops and canal network.

Did you know? The castle was converted into a cotton mill in the 19th century, and machinery bolt-holes are still visible in the ancient stonework.
