About Graslei & Korenlei
Ghent's most beautiful canal quay, lined with medieval guild houses whose perfect reflections shimmer in the River Leie, the city's most photographed panorama.
The Graslei and Korenlei, 'Grass Quay' and 'Grain Quay' in Dutch, face each other across the River Leie at the historic heart of medieval Ghent. Together they form the most picturesque waterfront in Belgium and one of the finest medieval quaysides in all of Europe. The Graslei is the showpiece: a row of impeccably preserved guild houses dating from the twelfth to seventeenth centuries, each built by one of the city's powerful mercantile guilds. The Grain Weighers' House (1199), the Free Boatmen's House, and the Customs House are among the finest examples.
In the Middle Ages this was the commercial heart of Ghent, boats laden with grain, cloth, and spices from across northern Europe unloaded here, weighed and taxed at the quayside buildings. The reflections of the guild facades in the still water of the Leie create one of the most photogenic views in Belgium, especially at golden hour. Canal boat tours depart from here throughout the day, offering a unique waterborne perspective on medieval Ghent.
Did you know? The oldest building on the Graslei, the Spijker grain store, dates from around 1200, making it one of the oldest secular buildings in Belgium.
