About Citadelpark
Ghent's grand 19th-century urban park, home to the MSK and SMAK art museums, leafy pavilions, and ponds, the cultural and green heart of the southern city.
Citadelpark is Ghent's largest urban park, created in 1873 on the site of a former military citadel that was demolished as the city expanded southward. The park covers 27 hectares of landscaped grounds with ponds, mature trees, walking paths, and several important cultural institutions at its heart.
The park is anchored by two of Belgium's most significant art museums: the MSK (Museum of Fine Arts) and SMAK (Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art), facing each other across the main path and together offering a comprehensive survey of Western art from the medieval period to the present. A large ornamental greenhouse pavilion and bandstand add to the Victorian and Edwardian character of the park's design. The park hosts the Ghent Floralies, one of the world's major flower shows, every five years, and serves year-round as a recreational and cultural space for the entire city.
Did you know? Citadelpark was created in 1873 on the site of a demolished Napoleonic-era military citadel, transforming a fortification into a public pleasure ground.
