About Lakenhalle & Botermarkt
The medieval Cloth Hall beside the Belfry, begun in 1425 but never completed, now serves as a visitor centre, its unfinished stone edges a monument to Ghent's interrupted ambitions.
The Lakenhalle, Cloth Hall, is one of Ghent's most historically poignant buildings: a vast medieval commercial building that was begun in 1425 to serve as the trading hall for Ghent's powerful cloth guilds, and was never completed. The building stands alongside the Belfry at the civic heart of the city, its cut stone edges still sharp after six hundred years, a permanent monument to the ambitions of a great city that ran out of either money or momentum before the project could be finished.
The construction was halted as Ghent's cloth trade began to decline in the late fifteenth century, the same commercial forces that had funded the building's construction ultimately ensured it would never be completed. The interior of the Lakenhalle now serves as Ghent's main visitor centre, with exhibitions and a display of the original golden dragon from the Belfry. The Botermarkt (Butter Market) square in front of it is one of Ghent's oldest market sites, still used for a weekly market today.
Did you know? The Lakenhalle was begun in 1425 but never finished, the city ran out of money as the cloth trade declined, leaving the building permanently incomplete.
