About St Michan's Church

A medieval church founded in 1095 whose vaults contain naturally mummified bodies, preserved by the dry limestone atmosphere and said to have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.

St Michan's Church on Church Street in Dublin's north inner city is one of the city's most unusual and atmospheric historic sites. The church was founded in 1095 by the Danes, making it older than Christ Church Cathedral, and the current building dates largely from the 17th century following a major rebuilding. The church's main claim to fame, however, is what lies beneath it.

In the vaulted limestone catacombs beneath the church, the dry atmosphere created by the limestone has naturally preserved the bodies of several individuals who were buried there centuries ago. Four mummified bodies are currently on display in accessible vaults, a crusader believed to be 800 years old (whose outstretched hand visitors are permitted to touch for luck), a nun, a thief who lost his hand, and a 'long lady'. Their preservation is extraordinary, the crusader's leathery skin and hair are clearly visible.

Bram Stoker grew up nearby and is widely believed to have visited the vaults as a young man. The connection between these mummified bodies and the character of Dracula, the undead figure who defies decay, has been noted by scholars for generations.

Did you know? The mummified crusader in St Michan's vaults is estimated to be 800 years old, visitors are permitted to touch his outstretched hand, a tradition said to bring good luck.
