About General Post Office (GPO)

The headquarters of the 1916 Easter Rising, where Pádraig Pearse read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic from its steps, the most significant building in modern Irish history.

The General Post Office on O'Connell Street is the most historically significant building in modern Ireland, a neoclassical granite portico where, on Easter Monday 24 April 1916, Pádraig Pearse stood on the steps and read aloud the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, declaring Ireland a free and independent nation. The GPO then became the headquarters of the Rising for the six days that followed, until it was evacuated under fire.

The building, designed by Francis Johnston and opened in 1818, was gutted by fire during the bombardment of 1916. Its reconstruction after independence was seen as a powerful symbol of renewal. Today the columns still bear the marks of the bullets and shrapnel from 1916, deliberately preserved as a reminder of the events that took place here.

The GPO Witness History exhibition inside the building tells the story of the Easter Rising through personal testimonies, artefacts, and immersive audio-visual displays. The building is still a working post office, the symbolic continuity of a state service operating from the site of the founding act of the republic.

Did you know? The GPO's granite columns still bear the bullet holes and shrapnel scars from the 1916 Easter Rising, they have been deliberately preserved and never repaired.
