About Malahide Castle
A remarkably intact 12th-century castle that was home to the Talbot family for 791 years, one of Ireland's most intact medieval fortifications, set in beautiful demesne grounds.
Malahide Castle, located in the seaside town of Malahide 15 kilometres north of Dublin and accessible by DART, is one of the oldest and most intact medieval castles in Ireland. The castle was built in the 12th century, shortly after the Norman conquest of Ireland, and was occupied almost continuously by the Talbot family from 1185 until 1976, an extraordinary 791 years of single-family ownership.
The castle is set within 260 acres of parkland, the Malahide Demesne, which includes a remarkable collection of trees from around the world, a butterfly house, a model railway, and a children's playground. The castle interior retains much of its medieval character, with a great hall, family portraits spanning 500 years, and a suite of formal rooms reflecting the castle's history from the Norman period to the 20th century.
The castle is particularly associated with the Irish Regency period and the Talbot family connections to Boswell, the biographer of Dr Johnson. The Ferns Fairy Trail through the demesne woodlands is one of Dublin's most popular children's attractions.
Did you know? The Talbot family owned Malahide Castle from 1185 to 1976, 791 years, making it one of the longest continuously single-family owned properties in the British Isles.
