Over 1.5 million people are buried here, a staggering number that reflects the cemetery's role as the final resting place for the entire Irish nation across nearly two centuries.
Among the famous dead: Daniel O'Connell himself, under a soaring round tower that is visible across north Dublin; Michael Collins, leader of the IRA in the War of Independence and chairman of the first Irish government, who died aged 31 in the Civil War; Éamon de Valera, three-time Taoiseach and two-time President; Roger Casement, executed for treason by Britain in 1916; Constance Markievicz; Maud Gonne; and writer Brendan Behan.
The Glasnevin Museum, opened in 2010, is one of Dublin's finest museums, using the stories of those buried here to tell the complete story of modern Ireland.
