About Chester Beatty Library

Voted Europe's leading museum twice, this free library in Dublin Castle grounds holds one of the world's greatest collections of manuscripts, from 5,500-year-old Egyptian papyri to Quranic masterpieces.

The Chester Beatty Library in the grounds of Dublin Castle is one of the great libraries of the world and, remarkably, entirely free to visit. Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875–1968) was an American-born mining magnate who became one of the 20th century's greatest collectors of rare manuscripts and art objects, amassing a collection of over 20,000 items over six decades of passionate collecting.

The collection spans every major world civilisation and every great religious tradition. Among its greatest treasures are ancient Egyptian papyri dating back 5,500 years; beautifully illuminated Quranic manuscripts from the 9th century onwards; exquisite Japanese woodblock prints; Mughal miniature paintings of extraordinary fineness; ancient biblical manuscripts among the oldest in the world; and European medieval Books of Hours.

Chester Beatty so loved Dublin that he bequeathed his entire collection to the Irish state, becoming Ireland's first honorary citizen. The library has twice been named Europe's Leading Museum by the World Travel Awards.

Did you know? The Chester Beatty Library holds ancient Egyptian papyri over 5,500 years old and biblical manuscripts from the 2nd century AD among the oldest in the world.
