About University College Cork

Founded in 1845 as one of three Irish Queen's Colleges, UCC's stunning Tudor Gothic Quadrangle and riverside campus are among the most beautiful in Europe.

University College Cork was founded in 1845 as Queen's College Cork, one of three new Irish universities created by Westminster legislation. Its main building, the iconic Tudor Gothic Quadrangle completed in 1849, was inspired by Oxford and Cambridge and has been compared, perhaps inevitably, to the fictional Hogwarts. The campus spreads along the western bank of the River Lee, a leafy sanctuary of fine Victorian architecture, ancient stone corridors, and immaculately kept gardens. The Stone Corridor, a long medieval-style gallery lined with portraits of past presidents, is famous across Ireland. The Lewis Glucksman Gallery, added in 2004 to a stunning design by O'Donnell + Tuomey, is one of Ireland's finest contemporary art galleries. UCC has produced numerous Nobel laureates and distinguished alumni, and George Boole, inventor of Boolean algebra, was its first professor of mathematics.

Did you know? George Boole, UCC's first Professor of Mathematics (1849), invented Boolean algebra, the binary logic system that underpins all modern computing and digital technology.
