About Cork Opera House

Cork's premier performing arts venue on Emmet Place, rebuilt in 1965 after a fire destroyed the original Victorian theatre, hosting everything from opera and ballet to comedy and rock concerts.

Cork Opera House occupies a commanding position on Emmet Place, at the heart of Cork's cultural quarter. The original theatre on this site opened in 1855 as the Athenaeum and from 1877 became Cork's primary venue for opera, theatre, and musical entertainment. A catastrophic fire in 1955 destroyed the building, and after nearly a decade of fundraising and planning, the current building, a modernist structure designed by the architects Scott Tallon Walker, opened in 1965. Over the subsequent decades, the Opera House has been expanded and refurbished, and today it is the largest producing and presenting theatre outside Dublin, with a main auditorium seating over 1,000 and a smaller studio venue. Its programme ranges from grand opera and world-class ballet to drama, comedy, pantomime, and popular music, making it a true cornerstone of Cork's cultural life.

Did you know? A catastrophic fire on 12 December 1955 destroyed the original Victorian theatre on this site, the ruins stood for years before the current modernist building opened in 1965.
