About Crawford Art Gallery
Cork's leading public art gallery, free to enter, housing Canova plaster casts, Jack B. Yeats paintings, and magnificent Harry Clarke stained glass.
Crawford Art Gallery is one of Ireland's finest public art collections, housed in a splendid 18th-century building on Emmet Place that was originally the Customs House of Cork. The gallery takes its name from William Horatio Crawford, a local brewing magnate who funded its expansion in 1884. Among its greatest treasures are a set of plaster casts of classical sculptures, including works attributed to Canova, gifted by King George IV, and an extraordinary collection of stained glass panels by Harry Clarke, Ireland's greatest stained glass artist. The gallery's permanent collection spans five centuries of Irish and European art, with particular strengths in 19th and 20th-century Irish painting, including works by Jack B. Yeats, Nathaniel Grogan, and James Barry. Entry is free, making it one of Cork's most accessible cultural treasures.
Did you know? The building was originally Cork's Custom House before becoming an art gallery, it dates to the early 18th century when Cork was one of Ireland's most important trading ports.
