About Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert

One of Europe's oldest grand covered shopping arcades, opened in 1847, a magnificent glass-vaulted passage lined with chocolatiers, perfumeries, a theatre, and elegant boutiques, a European landmark of refined commerce.

The Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert is one of the oldest monumental covered shopping galleries in Europe, predating Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II by three decades, and remains one of the most beautiful. Designed by the architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar and opened by King Leopold I in 1847, the gallery stretches through the heart of old Brussels as three interconnected arcades: the Galerie du Roi, the Galerie de la Reine, and the Galerie des Princes.

The glass-vaulted ceiling soars to 18 metres, flooding the space with natural light. The 213-metre-long gallery is lined with chocolatiers (including Neuhaus, where the praline was invented), perfumeries, bookshops, leather goods, jewellery, a theatre, and cafés. Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas frequented the gallery when they lived in Brussels, and Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels are said to have discussed ideas here in the weeks before writing the Communist Manifesto in 1848.
