About Parc de Bruxelles

An elegant 18th-century formal garden at the heart of historic Brussels, stretching between the Royal Palace and the Parliament, where Belgian revolutionaries fought in 1830 to win their independence.

The Parc de Bruxelles, Brussels Park, is the formal French garden at the very heart of historic Brussels, a 13-hectare rectangle of geometric paths, fountains, sculptures, and ancient lime trees laid out in 1780 on the former hunting grounds of the Dukes of Brabant. It stretches along the central axis of the upper city, connecting the Royal Palace at one end with the Parliament building (Palais de la Nation) at the other.

Historically, the park was the scene of fierce fighting during the Belgian Revolution of 1830, when revolutionary citizens drove out the Dutch garrison forces and laid the groundwork for Belgian independence. The liberal Belgian constitution, considered one of the most progressive of its era, was drafted in the Parliament building at the north end of the axis in the months following. Today, the park is a cherished green lung for the EU Quarter, Brussels residents, and tourists alike, with outdoor concerts in summer.

Did you know? The park was the scene of the fiercest fighting of the 1830 Belgian Revolution, when revolutionary citizens drove out Dutch troops and won Belgian independence.
