Ixelles (Dutch: Elsene) is one of Brussels' 19 communes and arguably the most culturally diverse and artistically vibrant. Place Flagey is Ixelles' beating heart: a large square dominated by the enormous Flemish Expressionist former INR radio building, built 1929–1938 and nicknamed "the aircraft carrier" for its streamlined shape. Now converted into the Flagey cultural centre, it hosts concerts, cinema, and arts events year-round. On weekends, the square fills with a popular food and vintage market. The surrounding streets contain extraordinary concentrations of Art Nouveau houses, the Abbaye de la Cambre, and the Ixelles Museum.
