About Laeken & Royal Greenhouses

The royal domain of Laeken contains the Belgian royal family's private château, spectacular iron-and-glass greenhouses open briefly each spring, and two extraordinary exotic pavilions built by Leopold II, the Japanese Tower and Chinese Pavilion.

Laeken is the northernmost commune of Brussels and home to the Belgian royal estate, a large private domain containing the Château Royal (the actual residence of the royal family), the Church of Our Lady of Laeken (royal burial church), and most spectacularly, the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken.

The Serres royales de Laeken were built between 1873 and 1895 by architect Alphonse Balat for King Leopold II, who also commissioned the young Victor Horta as Balat's assistant, as one of the largest greenhouse complexes in the world. The iron-and-glass structures cover nearly 2.5 hectares and contain extraordinary collections of camellias, geraniums, azaleas, and rare tropical plants. They are open to the public for approximately three weeks each April and May, drawing enormous crowds.

Also in Laeken: the Japanese Tower (1905) and Chinese Pavilion (1906), two elaborate Orientalist buildings commissioned by Leopold II for the 1900 World's Fair and reassembled here, now operated as museums.

Did you know? The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken are only open to the public for approximately three weeks each spring, and queues form from early morning on their first day of opening.
