About Belgian Comic Strip Center
A world-famous museum celebrating Belgium's extraordinary comic strip heritage, home of Tintin, Lucky Luke, and the Smurfs, housed in a spectacular Art Nouveau building designed by Victor Horta.
The Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée (CBBD), the Belgian Comic Strip Center, is one of the most delightful museums in Brussels, celebrating a cultural heritage that is uniquely Belgian in its depth and global influence. Belgium has produced an extraordinary roll-call of internationally beloved comic characters: Tintin and Captain Haddock (Hergé), Lucky Luke (Morris), Spirou and Fantasio (Franquin), the Smurfs (Peyo), Gaston Lagaffe (Franquin), and Blake and Mortimer (E.P. Jacobs), among many others.
The museum is housed in a magnificent 1906 Art Nouveau building, the former Waucquez linen warehouse, designed by Victor Horta. The building was rescued from demolition in the 1980s and converted into the museum with the ironwork, stained glass, and spatial drama of Horta's design fully preserved and celebrated. The collection includes original drawings, storyboards, publishing archives, and immersive thematic exhibitions. There is also a wonderful specialist comic bookshop and an archive reading room.
Did you know? Belgium has produced some of the most beloved comic characters in the world including Tintin, the Smurfs, Lucky Luke, and Gaston Lagaffe, earning it the nickname "the 9th art capital of the world."
