About St Martin's Cathedral

The Gothic cathedral below the castle where eleven Hungarian kings and queens were crowned, its 85-metre tower topped not by a cross but by a gilded replica of the Crown of St Stephen.

St Martin's Cathedral, the largest and one of the oldest churches in Bratislava, stands on the western edge of the Old Town below the castle. Work on the Gothic church began in 1311 and it was consecrated in 1452. From 1563 to 1830 it was the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary, after the old coronation city fell to the Ottomans; eleven kings and queens, among them Maria Theresa, were crowned here.

Its 85-metre tower, built into the old city walls, is crowned not by a cross but by a gilded replica of the Crown of St Stephen, weighing some 150 kilograms, set there in 1847. Inside is a famous Baroque group by Georg Raphael Donner showing St Martin, dressed as a Hungarian hussar, dividing his cloak with a beggar. Crypts lie beneath the church, which has been under restoration since 1997.
