About Devín Castle

The dramatic ruined castle on a crag where the Morava meets the Danube, an ancient Great Moravian stronghold blown up by Napoleon's troops, now a cherished symbol of Slovak national history.

Devín Castle (Hrad Devín) is a romantic ruin on a high rocky crag where the Morava river flows into the Danube, about ten kilometres west of the city centre. The crag has guarded this strategic river meeting since ancient times, used by Celts and Romans; in the ninth century it was an important stronghold of Great Moravia, the first great Slavic state, usually identified with the fortress of Dowina.

In 1809 Napoleon's retreating troops mined and blew up the castle, and it has been a ruin ever since. In 1836 the young Slovak patriot Ľudovít Štúr and his friends made a secret pilgrimage up to the ruins, and Devín became a powerful symbol of the Slovak nation. In the communist era the Iron Curtain ran just below it, and a nearby memorial honours those who died trying to flee to the West.
