About Bratislava Castle
The great white castle with four corner towers that crowns a hill above the Danube, the city's emblem for centuries, burned to a ruin in 1811 and rebuilt, now a museum with sweeping views.
Bratislava Castle is the emblem of the city, a massive rectangular white building with four corner towers standing on a rocky hill of the Little Carpathians directly above the Danube. The hill has been fortified since prehistory, used by Celts and Romans, and the castle became a major royal seat under Sigismund of Luxembourg in the fifteenth century; its oldest part, the Crown Tower, once guarded the crown jewels of Hungary.
Queen Maria Theresa turned the fortress into a grand Baroque royal residence in the eighteenth century. In 1811 a fire started by careless soldiers reduced it to a ruin, and for over a century it stood gutted, before being rebuilt from 1957. Today it houses part of the Slovak National Museum, and its terraces and Baroque garden give wide views over the city and into Austria.
