The most expensive wine in Bordeaux, produced from just 11.5 hectares of rare blue clay in the Pomerol appellation, with no official classification but legendary status, producing almost pure Merlot of extraordinary richness and depth.
Château Pétrus is the most extraordinary wine estate in Bordeaux by almost any measure, it is the most expensive, the most sought-after, and in many ways the most unlikely great wine in the world. The estate covers only 11.5 hectares (compared to 82 hectares at Château Margaux), it was never included in any Bordeaux classification (the 1855 Classification only covered Médoc estates, and Pétrus is in Pomerol on the Right Bank), and it produces only about 30,000 bottles per year. The key to Pétrus is the terroir: the estate sits on a unique deposit of button-blue clay, a singular geological feature of the Pomerol plateau, that retains moisture in dry years and drains rapidly in wet years, creating perfect growing conditions for Merlot. The wine is made from 95-100 percent Merlot (Cabernet Franc fills the remainder), aged in new French oak, and is typically so rich and concentrated that it can seem almost thick when young.
