About Château Lafite Rothschild
The most prestigious name in wine, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac owned by the Rothschild family since 1868, whose bottles regularly command the highest prices at auction of any Bordeaux estate.
Château Lafite Rothschild is perhaps the single most famous wine name in the world, particularly in China and Asia, where Lafite has achieved an almost mythological status as the ultimate symbol of luxury and prestige. The estate, located at the northern tip of the Pauillac appellation, was classified as a First Growth in 1855 and has been owned by the Baron James de Rothschild branch of the French banking family since 1868. The estate covers 112 hectares of which 103 are planted with vines, a higher proportion of Merlot than most Médoc properties, which contributes to the relative softness and accessibility of the wine compared to Latour or Mouton. The circular underground wine cellar, designed by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill and inaugurated in 1988, is one of the architectural landmarks of the Bordeaux wine world. Lafite wines are among the most forged and counterfeited wines in the world, particularly in Asia.
