About Teatro Arriaga

Bilbao's magnificent neo-Baroque opera house, opened in 1890 on the banks of the Nervión, named after local composer Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, known as the Spanish Mozart.

The Teatro Arriaga is one of the finest 19th-century opera houses in northern Spain, and the most visible symbol of Bilbao's cultural ambition at the height of its industrial wealth. Built between 1886 and 1890 to designs by Joaquín Rucoba, the building occupies a commanding position at the edge of the Casco Viejo, its ornate neo-Baroque facade reflected in the waters of the Nervión when the light is right. The theatre was named after Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga (1806–1826), a Bilbao-born composer of extraordinary precocity who died at 19 and is considered one of the great what-ifs of European musical history. The interior is lavish: red velvet, gilt, crystal chandeliers, and boxes arranged in the classic horseshoe configuration. The theatre presents opera, dance, orchestral concerts, and theatre. A guided tour of the interior reveals extraordinary craftsmanship.
