About Funicular de Artxanda
The historic funicular railway climbing to Mount Artxanda, offering the most panoramic views over Bilbao and its industrial valley, in service since 1915.
The Funicular de Artxanda has been carrying Bilbao residents and visitors up to the summit of Mount Artxanda since 1915, making it one of the oldest funicular railways still operating in Spain. The short journey, around three minutes, rises 223 metres to a height of 336 metres above sea level, where the hilltop offers what many consider the finest panoramic viewpoint over the entire city of Bilbao. From the summit, the whole urban landscape spreads below: the Nervión valley, the industrial heritage of the estuary, the Ensanche grid, and on clear days the mountains of the Basque interior. The hilltop park contains restaurants, picnic areas, and woodland walks. The funicular was completely renovated in 2004 while maintaining its classic character. A one-way ticket costs around €1.55.
