About Palacio Euskalduna Conference and Concert Hall
Bilbao's stunning ship-inspired conference and concert hall (1999), home to the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, built on the site of the historic Euskalduna shipyard.
The Palacio Euskalduna, completed in 1999, is one of the most architecturally dramatic buildings of Bilbao's urban regeneration. Designed by Federico Soriano and Dolores Palacios, the building occupies the site of the former Euskalduna shipyard on the Nervión, and its entire design is conceived as a tribute to the last ship built there. The oxidised Cor-Ten steel cladding gives the building the patina of aged iron, deliberately evoking the industrial heritage of the site. The complex contains a 2,164-seat concert hall with excellent acoustics, home to the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and the Euskadiko Orkestra, and a full conference facility. The building won the prestigious Enric Miralles Prize for Basque architecture and is considered one of the defining works of Bilbao's architectural renaissance.
