About Queen's University Belfast

A renowned research university founded in 1845, its landmark Tudor Revival Lanyon Building is one of Ireland's great architectural icons, set in the heart of the leafy university quarter.

Queen's University Belfast was established in 1845 as one of three Queen's Colleges created to provide university education across Ireland, the others were in Cork and Galway. The iconic Lanyon Building, designed by Belfast architect Charles Lanyon and modelled on Magdalen College Oxford, presents a magnificent Tudor Revival facade of red brick with tall mullioned windows, octagonal turrets, and a castellated parapet. The university received its Royal Charter in 1908. Today it is one of the UK's leading research universities with around 25,000 students and a global reputation for excellence in medicine, law, engineering, and the humanities. The Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry, named for the Nobel Prize-winning poet (1995) who taught at Queen's in the 1960s and maintained a lifelong connection, is one of the premier institutions for poetry in the English-speaking world. The Naughton Gallery within the university maintains a collection of Irish and international contemporary art. The surrounding university quarter, with its Victorian terraced streets, the Botanic Gardens, and the Ulster Museum, constitutes one of Belfast's most elegant and intellectually rich neighbourhoods.

Did you know? The Lanyon Building was modelled on Magdalen College, Oxford, a deliberate choice to signal Queen's University's ambition to rank among the great learning institutions of the British Isles.
