About Crumlin Road Gaol
A formidable Victorian prison designed by Charles Lanyon in 1846, which held political prisoners across 150 years of Irish history including the Troubles, connected to its courthouse by an underground tunnel.
Crumlin Road Gaol, designed by the prolific Belfast architect Sir Charles Lanyon and opened in 1846, was conceived as a model Victorian institution, an embodiment of the progressive nineteenth-century belief that properly designed incarceration could reform as well as punish. Its radiating four-wing plan was considered state-of-the-art, allowing maximum surveillance from a central rotunda. The Italianate limestone facade stretches imposingly along the north side of Crumlin Road. One of the gaol's most remarkable features is the underground tunnel connecting it to the courthouse directly opposite, through which prisoners were walked for 150 years to face trial across the road. Notable prisoners included Éamon de Valera in 1924 and numerous paramilitaries from both Republican and Loyalist organisations during the Troubles, when over 17,000 prisoners passed through its gates. The last execution took place in 1961, and the prison closed in 1996 after exactly 150 years of operation. Today it operates as one of Belfast's most popular heritage attractions, offering daily guided tours of the cells, tunnel, execution chamber, and circle, as well as acclaimed paranormal events and music festivals.
Did you know? Éamon de Valera, later Taoiseach and President of Ireland, was imprisoned at Crumlin Road Gaol in 1924 after illegally entering Northern Ireland, where he was held in solitary confinement for a month.
